Braid course celebrates centenary

The James Braid-designed North Shore club in Skegness on England’s east coast is celebrating its centenary this year.

From 23-25 April, the club plans a series of competitions in celebration of its anniversary, including a trick shot exhibition by former European Tour player David Edwards. The course will be reversed for the centenary weekend, playing in its original configuration, as envisaged by Braid.

Club records show that Braid, who felt the locally-available grass to be unsuitable, demanded over 9000 litres of specially germinated grass seed to be imported from Germany during the construction of the course.

From only 82 members in 1919, the club peaked in 1939 with a membership register of over 1200 – believed to the UK’s biggest at that time.
