Discussions are underway about a potential new course on the Balearic island of Ibiza.

Developer Grupo Empresas Matutes, which recently opened the Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel and Ushuaia Tower on the island, has plans to build an 18-hole public course with a driving range and golf school.

Three potential locations for the course have been identified. One site lies between Cala Conta and Cala Tarida on the island’s west coast, another in Benimussa between San Jose and San Antonio, and one in Playa d’en Bossa on the south coast.

A recent survey carried out by the Balearic Institute for Advanced Social Studies on behalf of Grupo Empresas Matutes indicated the 68 per cent of Ibizans are in favour of a public golf course on the island.

The plan has been identified as a prospective boost to off-season tourism on the island, in a similar ilk to that on Majorca, which has over 20 golf courses in place, many of which operate all year round.

One hurdle that will need to be negotiated is the fact Ibiza is a Unesco World Heritage island, meaning particular emphasis will have to be placed onto the environmental factors and repercussions of any potential course.

No architect or construction company has been identified by Grupo Emprasas Matutes yet.
