Fazio renovation for Carolina course

Tom Fazio’s design firm has completed a US$1 million renovation of the East course at the Belfair community, located near Bluffton in South Carolina.

The course, originally built in 1999, measures 6,900 yards and includes views over the ocean and lagoons. Parts of the East were in need of replacement, so under the eye of superintendent Eric Greytok, the course closed in May for renovation of bunkers, regrassing of greens, removal of shading trees and replacement of 350 cart path panels.

Fazio associate Blake Bickford, who was originally on site during construction of the East course, oversaw the work. The primary contractor working with the Belfair staff was Aspen Construction

The greens were regrassed with MiniVerde Bermuda, replacing the bentgrass greens which were difficult to keep in shape so far south. All greenside and fairway bunkers were cored out, contoured, and new drainage and liner installed. The works were completed in less than four months, and the course will reopen on 9 September. No member assessment was made to pay for the project.

“The completion of this project is a testament to the foresight and commitment of Belfair to invest in its outstanding courses and position Belfair as a premiere golf community for many years to com,” said Fazio designer Blake Bickford.
