First Montenegro project under way

The Luštica Bay site in Montenegro

Swiss/Egyptian firm Orascom Development has begun work on its Luštica Bay project, which will include thefirst golf course in the Balkan republic of Montenegro. Orascom and the Montenegrin government are partners in Luštica Development, the firm behind the project.

Gary Player Design has been chosen to create the golf course; Player associate Steven Macfarlane will serve as lead designer. “The site is absolutely stunning, surrounded by water and mountain views,” Player said at a recent press conference.

The course's practice facility, including a driving range, putting green and restaurant, has already opened, and is offering lessons to local would-be golfers. “Since this is the first golf course in Montenegro, it is especially important to expose the sport to the local youth through lessons and friendly competitions,” said Samuel Meyer, the MD of Luštica Development. “We would very much like to see the future generations of Montenegrins actively engaged in golf and maybe even get some serious contenders within the international golf community from this region.”

The developers are committed to delivering most of the project within four years. Scottish firm Braemar Golf has been appointed as project agronomist. Braemar director Jonathan Pendry said: “We have been fortunate to have worked with Gary Player Design on previous projects. Foremost in our consideration will be how to select the most sustainable solutions for the golf course, including turfgrass selection, rootzone profile, water management and control techniques.”
