GOOD READ Doonbeg Ghosts

If Links of Heaven makes one want immediately to jump on a plane and head for Ireland, what effect must this book have? The premise of 'certified golf nut' Morris's entertaining little volume is that his lifelong friend and golfing partner James 'Tail Gunner' Carew, sadly deceased at an early age, returns from heaven to tell the tale of golf in Paradise.

Morris and the ghost of Carew then undertake a tour of many of Ireland's most famous venues, bringing the shades of Bobby Jones, Alister MacKenzie and Old Tom Morris, among others, along for the ride.

It's hard to know what to say about this, except that it is undeniably fun to read. Morris's insights into the design thinking of Old Tom, Dr Mac et al may not have been gathered under strict laboratory conditions, but he brings a new meaning to the oft-quoted maxim that golf can be a spiritual experience. Read with a tumbler of Irish whiskey at your disposal.
