Metropolis renovation for Heatwole

The Metropolis club in Westchester, New York, originally designed by Herbert Strong, and later altered by AW Tillinghast, is to undergo a renovation project at the end of the 2011 season.

Pennsylvania-based golf architect Dave Heatwole is leading the Metropolis project. Heatwole’s plans include altering two par four holes, the fifth and eighteenth. At the fifth, a new tee will extend to 401 yards, while the hole’s dogleg right will be softened, and visibility of the fairway from the tee enhanced.

For the home hole, Heatwole’s goal is to create a memorable finish that reflects the character of the complete layout. The renovation will eliminate the severity of the dogleg right and add approximately 20 yards to the back tees, lengthening it to 404 yards.

The new project follows the club’s renovation of its driving range, which debuted at the start of this season. Hitting areas were resurfaced and a portion of the hitting bays was covered with a permanent awning. The club found that this facility had become very popular.
