ASGCA
Formed in 1946, the prestigious American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) is the professional organization of golf course designers who are based in North America. Its members have designed and renovated golf courses around the world that range from venues that host The Masters, U.S. Open, PGA Championship, Ryder Cup and other important events to practical facilities that welcome new players to the game. Its members include some of the most respected golf course architects of today and yesteryear: Donald Ross, Robert Trent Jones, Stanley Thompson, Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Rees Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones II, Arthur Hills, Bill Coore, Jay Morrish, and Mike Hurdzan.
Talent, Vision and Experience
Members of ASGCA are, by virtue of their knowledge of the game, training, experience, vision and inherent ability, able to design and prepare specifications for a course of functional and aesthetic excellence. Most have designed and renovated dozens of golf courses and, therefore, are able to shepherd projects through the entire development or renovation process, from land and project planning and routing to permitting and construction oversight.
ASGCA’s membership process is rigorous and peer-reviewed and ensures that golf course owners, resort developers, club officials and other decision-makers can be confident that ASGCA members are truly experienced as golf course architects. Before being permitted to apply for membership, candidates must demonstrate that they have designed at least five new or renovated golf courses. Those invited to apply for membership then must be sponsored by three ASGCA members, submit letters of recommendation from clients, have four of their golf courses evaluated by ASGCA members, and be interviewed by a panel of ASGCA members.
Preserving the Game & the Environment
ASGCA works to promote the professionalism of its members, especially by providing educational opportunities that expose ASGCA members to the latest design concepts, best practices and technical opportunities; support design excellence in the profession and industry, by raising awareness for golf course architecture and helping the public understand the range of economic, environmental, and community benefits provided by golf courses; and help grow the game of golf, by working with the leading organizations in golf to introduce the game to new players and provide them with facilities that are welcoming and fun to play.
