Rees Jones’ firm is to renovate the 18-hole Monster Golf Course at the site of the former Concord Resort and Golf Club in New York State.

Work on the course is part of the Adelaar project, a US$750 development 90 miles from New York City.

Led by developers EPR Properties, Adelaar will be located on the site of the once-famed Concord Resort, which closed in 1998 due to financial problems.

The golf course was originally designed by Joseph Finger, Jimmy Demaret and Jackie Burke Jr. and has remained open as The Monster Golf Club, despite the difficulties faced by the Concord Resort.

The 7,650 yard course is a par 72, and Jones said of the project: “I jumped at the chance to re-design the Monster golf course at Adelaar. We’re going to modernise it and create something really memorable for golfers of all skills.”

Once complete, Adelaar – the Dutch word for Eagle – will also be home to a casino, indoor waterpark and hotel. Construction will begin as soon as all approvals and permits are finalised.
