Beau Welling Design breaks ground on The Peninsula Club renovation

The Peninsula Club, on the shores of Lake Norman near Charlotte, North Carolina, has broken ground on a renovation of its golf course. The project is being led by Beau Welling and his design associate Chase Webb.

“After a couple of years of planning and preparation, we are excited to break ground on a project that will create a brand new feeling and playing experience for the golf course as well as other facilities for the club’s membership,” said Welling. “We are proud to add to the tradition of excellence that The Peninsula Club has curated for decades, and we believe this project will enhance the guest and membership experience both on and off the course.”

The routing and golf course footprint will remain largely the same, with Welling and Webb focusing on tweaking the layout to improve strategy, shotmaking opportunities and conditions.

The  course will be regrassed with Tahoma31 bermuda,  TifEagle bermuda on greens, and a new native fescue mix for out-of-play areas. Bunkers will be reworked to reduce the overall sand square footage. There will be some tree removal, to open up new sightlines and views of Lake Norman, and work on irrigation, drainage and cart paths.

An expansion of practice areas, will include a new performance centre and pro shop.

“Continuing our legacy and enhancing the member experience is a primary focus for us at The Peninsula Club,” says club president Mike Hoertt. “Three years ago, the club envisioned a new and improved member experience, and now, our vision is becoming a reality. This historic project will elevate the club to new heights and pave the way for future generations of members and guests to create lasting memories for decades to come.”

Work is expected to be complete by October 2024.
