US ski and golf operator Boyne Resorts has turned to Raymond Hearn for the design of par-three courses for three of its destinations.

Resorts in Maine, Michigan and Montana will introduce new nine-hole layouts, featuring large greens and flexible teeing options, each designed to emphasise the unique natural setting of the area.

At The Highlands at Harbor Springs in Michigan, which already has four 18-hole courses, Hearn’s new par-three layout is routed across a sloping site and set among fescue grass, with nine holes ranging from 38 to 120 yards. He is also working on a renovation of the club’s 18-hole Donald Ross Memorial course, where each hole is a tribute to the Golden Age legend.

Hearn’s two other par-three layouts for Boyne Resorts are at Sugarloaf Golf Club in Maine, where his design features numerous creeks and will join the club’s highly regarded Robert Trent Jones Jr course, and at the massive Big Sky ski resort in southwest Montana, which also has an Arnold Palmer course. At both locations Hearn will also be remodelling the practice areas.

Hearn says: “Par-three courses are hot in the US right now! I’m honoured to be working with the Boyne Resorts team on these three incredible new layouts.”

All three courses are due to open in 2024 or 2025 and Hearn is also working with Boyne Resorts on long range master planning for four of its full-length golf courses.
