Construction of new short course under way at SkyRidge Park City

Construction is under way on a new course and driving range concept at the SkyRidge Mountain Community near Park City, Utah.

The facility, called theStelle Golf, will include a three-hole layout designed by Jon Garner, a 330-yard driving range with Toptracer technology plus a clubhouse and equestrian centre built on 60 acres of land at the new lifestyle community development.

Garner began designing a three-hole course consisting of a par three, four and five, and then adapted his plan so the layout could also be played as a nine-hole par-three course.

“The idea of having multiple ways to play a golf course came up in the planning sessions with the clients,” said Garner. “This design allows golfers to play different courses within the course boundary without impacting the spectacular views from either layout. The golf experience is fully maximised in every way possible including adding artificial tees on the short course. That said, we have been able to find additional ways to play the course as it evolves during construction.

“One of the design goals was to create a fun experience for the beginner golfers where they can enjoy playing in this beautiful mountain setting that includes views of Deer Valley Resort and the new Mayflower Resort. It is easy to make difficult courses, but it is more challenging to design a course that is playable for all levels of golfers; particularly in mountain terrain.”

Ted Simons of Synergy Group Consulting provided the developers with advice on the project. “One of the founders of SkyRidge Park City had long envisioned developing short courses at the base of ski resorts as an alternative to traditional eighteen holes, while providing an additional amenity and revenue driver during the off season,” he said.

“To extend the condensed golf season in Park City, a below-grade covered range tee-line was designed, complete with 15 heated hitting bays and Toptracer technology, a 200-foot-long artificial tee-line on top of the range cover, and a 200-foot-long natural grass tee-line below,” added Simons. “Artificial target greens and bunkers are being installed on the driving range to allow for extended use during the unpredictable winter shoulder seasons.”

Public play will be available at theStelle Golf, which is expected to open in late summer 2024.
