Military base plans new 36-hole venture to replace existing courses.
Officials at the US Army base at Fort Meade in Maryland are planning a new golf course.
Until a few years ago, Fort Meade had 36 holes of golf, but the growth of the base’s facilities brought about a reduction to 27, and further pressure on the golf courses is expected to lead to its complete demise over the coming years.
According to the local Odenton Patch website, base officials are expected to confirm plans for a new 36-hole golf complex to be built on a 367 acre site nearby. Around 90 acres of the new site is capped landfill. The intention is to have the new course in place before the closure of the existing one becomes necessary.
Fort Meade is now considering how to pay for the new course, and plans a town hall meeting to discuss the project with local residents in the near future. An announcement is expected in May.
