The Dedman family, owners of the Pinehurst resort in North Carolina, has expanded its golf holdings by buying the nearby Pit golf course.

Designed by Pinehurst-based golf architect Dan Maples, whose father Ellis built the resort’s Number 5 course in the 1960s, the Pit was constructed from a former sand quarry, and opened in 1985. The course’s design was regarded as original and influential in its day, but its condition has been criticised in recent years.

“We have no immediate plans for the property,” Bob Dedman Jr told the Southern Pines Pilot. “Over the next several weeks we plan to evaluate the golf course, clubhouse and other facilities.”
