Big Foot Country Club in Fontana, Wisconsin, is set to reopen its 1924 Tom Bendelow golf course following a renovation by Zinkand Golf Design.

The multi-phase project began in 2024 with golf architect David Zinkand focusing on improving playability and preserving elements of the historic layout.

“Big Foot is set across striking natural terrain punctuated by a meandering stream and spring-fed ponds,” said Zinkand. “These traits, when combined with Bendelow’s Golden Age philosophies, give us an incredible canvas to work with.”

Work has included reshaping and repositioning bunkers, recontouring greens and adjusting corridors to provide players with clearer sightlines and more shot options off the tee. The way golfers play holes twelve, thirteen and fourteen has also been reversed.

Select removal of Norway spruce trees has also helped restore the course’s long-range vistas and highlighted its mature hardwoods.

“Dave is so good at taking what the land presents and making it that much more interesting for golf,” said Matthew Leinen, superintendent at Big Foot Country Club. “He and his staff are meticulous with how they approach their work, which was deeply appreciated by our staff and the club membership.”

The third and final phase began in spring 2026, included the expansion of the practice range tee and introducing several sandy hollows across the property.

“Big Foot Country Club will stand as a reflection of our core principles,” said Zinkand. “Strategic options, connection to the land and a genuine sense of adventure define the experience.”

Leinen said: “We’re excited to have our full 18 holes back open for play but also look forward to Dave’s continued knowledge, professionalism and dedication as smaller, more nuanced grounds enhancements continue at Big foot.”
