Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania has hired Gil Hanse for a renovation that will begin in spring 2023, according to a report by Andy Johnson of The Fried Egg.

The club has hosted nine US Opens, three PGA Championships, two US Women’s Opens and five US Amateurs and will next host the US Open in 2025.

Johnson says that Hanse’s plan focuses on rebuilding and reshaping bunkers to a style closer to what HC Fownes, Oakmont’s original architect, intended while improving member playability and maximising difficulty for championship golf. He notes the plans include improving drainage, and that Hanse also proposes restoring greens to their original sizes.

An extract from the master plan reveals that Hanse is planning to rebuild the hook bunker and add a new bunker between the eleventh and twelfth holes to “discourage cross-country golf”.

The project is expected to be complete by spring 2024, with the course open throughout.
