Golfplan has started a golf course renovation at El Macero Country Club, near Sacramento, California.

DHR Golf Construction began work at the Troon-operated club in late April, with the renovation expected to last four months.

The project includes a renovation of all 18 green complexes, including softening their shapes to allow water to flow away from the putting surfaces. Greens will be sodded with TifTuf, a drought-tolerant hybrid bermuda, while collars will feature bentgrass.

The overall square footage of bunkers will be reduced by 60 per cent, with the sand hazards featuring new drainage, liners and sand. The updated bunkers will also have more points of entry, easing access and making them more playable.

“We’re excited about the course renovation and the improvements being made,” said El Macero’s general manager Chris Johnson. “The new pure white sand will be a dramatic difference visually, while members will be given different shot options around the greens with newly designed collection areas and reduced bunker footprints. The turf conditions of the green surrounds will also perform better throughout the year compared to the previous common bermudagrass.”

The course is expected to reopen in September 2025.
