Gopher Watch Competition – October 2017

There aren’t too many bunkers in the world deliberately shaped to resemble an animal. There’s Stanley Thompson’s ‘dragon and fireball’ on the fifth hole at Highlands Links in Canada, restored a few years ago by architect Ian Andrew, and there’s the green monkey at... well, the Green Monkey course at Sandy Lane in Barbados. So it wasn’t too hard for a bunch of respondents to identify the camel bunker on Medinah’s No. 1 course in Chicago, built originally by Tom Bendelow and renovated recently by Tom Doak and his Renaissance crew. Dick Day was first out of the hat, and wins the GCA shirt. Congratulations!

We’re still in the US this time, and we have a shot of a hole that is famous for something that happened there for the last time. No more clues – we think this one is quite easy! Answers, as usual, to gopher@golfcoursearchitecture.net
