Calusa Country Club in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, will open a new 12-hole golf course designed by Gordon Lewis later this year.

The club is a Lennar Homes masterplanned community and opened its 18-hole golf course, also designed by Lewis, in February 2025.

Lewis’s 12-hole layout will play to a par 48, stretching from 2,978 to 4,279 yards. The shortest hole is the par-three eighth, measuring just 84 yards from the forward tee, while the longest is the 549-yard second. The routing also features three short par fours – holes one, five and twelve.

“The 12-hole course at Calusa has two of my favourite holes of all time,” said Lewis. “Number two is a Cape hole, which means bite off what you dare on the drive. It’s always been one of my favourite shots. I played one on my grandad’s home course a few times every summer – it just really makes you think and isn’t that what golf is all about? And then there is number eight – it’s a little cutie. With a tee shot that is 200-feet wide, golfers will have a different angle of attack everyday they play. Plus, it’s one of those tough little, short ‘touch’ shots to a shallow green. I know golfers are going to enjoy this fun, quick to play, journey as much as we loved building it.”

In addition to the two golf courses, the club has a short-game area, one-acre putting green, fire pit, aqua driving range and a golf simulator in the clubhouse.

“The new 12-hole course caters to the growing demand for faster, more flexible play without compromising variety or challenge,” said Matthew Koratich, director of community management at Lennar Southwest Florida. “It’s a forward-thinking design that makes the game more accessible, especially for juniors, newcomers and time-conscious players, while still delivering the strategic elements experienced golfers appreciate.”

Troon chief operating officer Bruce Glasco said: “The golf amenities they are creating at Calusa are making the game more fun and accessible for all.”
