Long Cove, a lakefront community located an hour’s drive southeast of Dallas, Texas, is developing a new, invitation-only private club called The Old Mine Club. The centrepiece will be The Canary, an 18-hole golf course by Beau Welling Design that is expected to open for member play in 2027.

Welling will transform the former mining site into a layout of over 7,400 yards that will feature elevation changes, bold contours and water hazards that come into play on 10 holes, the majority of which will be on the back nine.

“Beau Welling Design and our team have been working on The Canary for nearly five years now, and we are excited to invite members to enjoy what will be an unrivalled golf experience,” said Don McNamara, founder of Long Cove. “We are thrilled to be collaborating with Beau and his team in transforming this land that was once the site of abandoned coal mines and a railroad into a striking lakefront course that will delight players and should be considered as one of the best layouts in the state.”

According to the project team, the signature holes will be the eleventh and eighteenth, both par fours that require tee shots over a cove to island fairways. These holes will be in full view of the clubhouse and Anchor House (a hub for fishing and angling activities) and will be connected to the mainland by bridges.

Other holes noted by the team include the fourth and fifth, which will play into mounding formed by dredging that created over two miles of shoreline at Long Cove. The ninth will have a dual-green setup, the thirteenth will play through a pine tree farm, and holes fourteen to sixteen will play around a channel formed from mining excavation.

“After years of planning and promising conversations with the leadership at Long Cove, our team is excited to see work underway,” said Welling. “It’s a rare opportunity to work with such a unique piece of land, and we’re excited to add to the legacy of this great property with a new championship golf course that the membership will enjoy for years to come.”

The Old Mine Club will also feature a 20,000-square-foot clubhouse overlooking the island holes. This facility will include a state-of-the-art fitness and wellness centre. A driving range, short-game zone and water sports area will complete the facilities.
