Monte Rei Golf & Country Club in the Algarve region of Portugal will close its golf course from April to September 2026 for renovation work. Designed by Jack Nicklaus’s firm, the North course opened in 2007 and is considered one of the top layouts in the country.

Having completed a detailed assessment of the course, the club is now planning landscaping and restoration of areas affected by recent fires, as well as selective work on the course, including reconstruction of greens, bunker upgrades and refurbishment of cart paths.

It will also upgrade its irrigation system and pump station to improve water efficiency, and complete work on its practice facilities, including the driving range teeing area.

The course work is part of a new investment plan for Monte Rei, which is managed by the Portuguese firm Details, backed by Arrow Global, the asset management business that acquired the club in January 2025.

Nuno Sepulveda, co-CEO of Details, said: “Monte Rei is already one of the finest golf courses in Portugal and Europe and that is something we deeply respect. This project is about taking a long-term view – protecting the character and playing qualities that members and guests value, while making thoughtful improvements that will allow the course to thrive for decades to come.

“When Monte Rei reopens, it will be stronger, more resilient, and better equipped for the future, while remaining unmistakably Monte Rei.”

In 2019, Monte Rei announced plans for a second course, also by Nicklaus Design, which has not yet been built.
