Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects (RTJ II) will redesign the golf course at Mena House in Cairo, Egypt.
Golf has been played at Mena House since 1899. The nine-hole layout (there are two sets of tees to allow the course to be played as an 18-hole round) is located close to The Great Pyramid of Giza.
For the redesign, RTJ II will aim to honour the course’s historic past but ensuring it is playable and challenging for modern golfers. The project includes regrassing, new irrigation, ground lighting to enable evening play and a new ‘social green’ to encourage resort guests and families to join in.
RTJ II is partnering Talaat Moustafa Group (TMG), one of the largest real estate development companies in Egypt, on the project.
“Mena House Golf Course is unlike any other golf destination in the world,” said Omar Hisham Talaat, chief business development officer for TMG. “With the Giza Pyramids as its backdrop, the course offers an extraordinary opportunity to create a gold experience that is both globally distinctive and deeply rooted in Egypt’s cultural legacy.”
Trent Jones, chief operating officer of RTJ II, said: “This is one of the most meaningful sites for golf anywhere in the world. We are honoured to steward a course with more than 125 years of history and to shape its next chapter with care, precision, and creativity.
“Our vision is to embrace the history of this awe-inspiring setting as golfers play beneath the 4,700-year-old Pyramids. Mena House has all the ingredients that make golf memorable: history, landscape, atmosphere, and a setting people will never forget. Our focus is on designing a course that belongs in that place.”
