Yale Golf Course in New Haven, Connecticut, will reopen in April 2026 following a restoration by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner.

The course, which first opened in 1926, was designed by Charles Blair Macdonald and Seth Raynor and occupies a rocky, heavily wooded site four miles west of Yale University. It has been widely heralded on every major Top 100 list for the boldness of its design but had gradually fallen into a deteriorated state, evident by tree overgrowth, bunker deterioration, green shrinkage and poor drainage, which collectively compromised the original design.

The goal of Hanse and Wagner’s work, the first major project to return the course to its former glory, was to restore the original scale and strategic intent of the Macdonald-Raynor layout, preserve its architectural integrity and upgrade infrastructure to modern standards.

“As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Yale Golf Course, this restoration honours both its history and architectural significance while positioning it for the future,” said Victoria Chun, director of athletics at Yale. “This meticulous restoration preserves the strategic brilliance of Macdonald and Raynor’s vision while integrating modern infrastructure and sustainable practices. We’re proud to reopen a world-class landmark that reflects the excellence and tradition synonymous with Yale.”

Greens, bunkers, fairways and tees have all been expanded to their historic dimensions. All putting surfaces have been reconstructed to USGA specifications for the first time and are now seeded with a bentgrass and fescue blend. Part of Hanse and Wagner’s work on greens has been the rebuild of the Double Punchbowl third green, back to its original 1926 design.

The designers have also restoring the double fairway on holes three and eighteen, reinstated two inverted bunkers on the sixth, removed trees to bring back original sight lines, added new back tees to extend the course beyond 7,000 yards and installed a new irrigation system.
