Bunker renovation work at Carlton Woods reaches completion
A project to renovate the bunkers on the course at The Club at Carlton Woods near The Woodlands, Texas, has been completed.
Originally designed by Tom Fazio, the course suffered severe flood damage in May 2016. At one stage, more than half the course was underwater, and heavy structural damage occurred.
Once the flooding had subsided and the damage was assessed, the club took the decision to renovate the course’s bunkering. Work commenced in August 2016, and a team from Fazio Design was brought in to help support the club’s efforts.
The work on the bunkers focused on three key areas: improving playability, improving accessibility and reducing the overall size of the bunkering on the course.
New liners and California White sand have been added to each bunker, while slope reduction at certain entry points has also been carried out.
An overall bunker size reduction from 135,000 sq ft to 95,000 sq ft will also increase the efficiency of maintenance and provide long-term cost reduction for the club.
“The amount of work we are doing today is going to cut future expenses exponentially,” said course superintendent Tim Huber. “By reducing the overall square footage, we’ve increased the long-term sustainability of the course for our members.”
