California’s El Macero set to reopen following Golfplan renovation

Golfplan has completed a renovation at El Macero Country Club, near Sacramento, California, with the course set to reopen to members on 1 September 2025.

The club’s course was originally designed by Bob Baldock in 1961. Since 2007, Troon has operated the club.

In April 2025, DHR Golf Construction began work, which has included renovating all 18 green complexes, revamping bunkers and regrassing.

Green shapes have been softened to allow water to flow away from the putting surfaces. The greens have been sodded with TifTuf, a drought-tolerant hybrid bermuda, while collars now feature bentgrass.

The overall square footage of bunkers has been reduced by 60 per cent, with the sand hazards featuring new drainage, liners and sand. The updated bunkers now have more points of entry, easing access and making them more playable.

“We’re thrilled with how the renovation turned out,” said Chris Johnson, El Macero’s general manager. “With the newly refreshed bunkers and more shot options around greens, golfers will discover new ways to play the course.”

Frank LaRosa, El Macero member and northern California golf journalist, added: “The contours and enhancements to the new bunkers topped with the eye-catching white sand are not only visually stunning but they create new sightlines for players contemplating their approach shots.”
