City of Midland gets approval for $10m renovation of Quail course at Hogan Park
Mid-America Golf & Landscape has started a renovation of the Quail course at Hogan Park in Midland, Texas, the first phase of a long-term plan developed by architect Trey Kemp to revitalise the 36-hole municipal facility.
The $10 million project was in planning for some time and represents a significant investment by the city of Midland to elevate public golf in West Texas.
“The Quail course project represents a significant reinvestment in public golf, combining historic preservation with modern design, infrastructure, and sustainability upgrades,” said Kemp. “While the course will remain familiar, every playing surface will be reimagined to elevate the golfing experience for beginners, families and competitive players alike.”
Kemp’s plan aims to improve playability, strategic interest and year-round conditioning, with all greens, surrounds and tee complexes being rebuilt. The updated tees will allow the course to stretch from just under 5,000 yards to more than 7,000, expanding its range for novice golfers through to competitive players. Select routing refinements are also planned, including converting the current par-three tenth into a par four and restoring an original pond on the twelfth.
Fairways throughout the course will be regrassed with TifTuf bermuda, a more traffic-tolerant variety chosen to improve long-term turf performance in the region’s climate.

A major component of the work involves the replacement of the course’s irrigation and water-quality systems. Designed by Larry Rodgers, the new infrastructure includes a complete irrigation overhaul and a reverse-osmosis (RO) treatment system that will serve both the facility’s Quail and Roadrunner courses once future phases are complete. The RO plant is engineered to manage Hogan Park’s challenging water conditions and deliver higher-quality water to greens and surrounds, with treatment levels adjustable throughout the year.
“The project is being supported by two key leaders at Hogan Park: golf course superintendent Tyson Kerby – who will oversee construction, grow-in and long-term turf management – and head golf professional Thomas Brantley – who has been instrumental in communicating the vision and benefits of the renovation to the golfing community,” said Kemp. “Their combined leadership ensures that the improvements will translate directly into better course conditioning, enhanced playability and a more welcoming experience for all golfers.
“This project marks an exciting new era for Midland golf, setting the foundation for future improvements to the Roadrunner course, practice facilities and clubhouse at Hogan Park.”
The Quail renovation is expected to be complete by summer 2026, with reopening planned for the autumn.
