Construction begins on new Harradine course in Russia

Construction of a new golf course designed by Harradine Golf has started in Kazan, Russia.

“The land is flat and low, which causes 40 per cent of the site to flood during the winter period,” said Peter Harradine. “The required material will be dredged from the Volga, Europe’s longest river, to raise the level and create rolling hills between fairways for safety, aesthetic and strategic reasons.

“The main attraction is the Volga, which is why we’re trying to exploit it as much as possible by designing at least one hole playing along this iconic and famous feature. We’ll also try to achieve panoramic views from as many holes as possible.”

Harradine’s initial design included a canal from the Volga to a water body at the northern end of the site. “The new canal would have meandered along and across various holes, thus, adding a lot of interest to the layout,” he said. “However, when the owner realised that the fluctuations of the Volga could exceed five metres, it was decided to create lakes instead.” This would give the client the desired constant water level, although with the high water table limiting lake depth, an extensive air release system under the liner is required to avoid future air pockets pushing the liner up.

Most existing trees are being kept and many native species will be planted, which Harradine says will enhance strategy and safety.

“The proximity of the town of Kazan will be a major factor in guaranteeing the success of the course,” said Harradine. “And the generous and ample practice facilities will satisfy many beginners and good players alike.”

It is expected that nine holes will open by autumn 2022 and a full 18 during spring 2023.
