Course at Quivira Golf Club reopens following renovations
The course at Quivira Golf Club in Los Cabos, Mexico, has reopened following a renovation project led by Nicklaus Design.
Some changes were deemed necessary on the course following storm damage, and design associate Jon Garner led the recent efforts.
A major focus of the project was the clifftop par four fifth hole. Here, work included the lowering of the fairway and removal of a bunker on the left side. This has resulted in the creation of a wide plateau on which players can land shots from the tee.
A bunker cut into the hillside at the fifth fairway’s far end makes for a great aiming point from the tee for players, while a rough cut of all perimeter areas has also taken place, making it easier for players to collect balls and keep them in play.
“From the first time I saw this extraordinary site, I knew this would be an amazing location for a short par four,” Nicklaus said. “The restoration maintains the character of the hole as one of most visually stunning par fours in the world.”
Areas of the seventeenth and eighteenth holes have been newly turfed. An arroyo on the seventeenth was widened by flood waters in September, which necessitated the hole’s green being moved to the right to slightly higher ground.
The course’s final hole has been shortened by moving the green back and adjacent to a set of dunes on the right of the hole.
The course at Quivira Golf Club was originally designed by Nicklaus Design and opened in 2014.
