Final nine work begins at Westham

Westham Golf Club will begin work next spring on the construction of the second nine holes, which will complete the 18-hole Nicklaus Design course.

The club, situated in Richmond, Virginia, US, is managed by Billy Casper Golf and owned by iStar Financial.

Crafted under the guidance of architect Tom Clark, of Ault, Clark and Associates, the new nine holes will feature undulating, Bermuda-grass fairways, as well as vintage scruffy-edged bunkering and dramatic elevation changes.

The course lies in Magnolia Green, a planned community with new single-family homes, which is also owned by iStar. The first nine holes opened in 2010, and Tom Page, vice president of iStar Financial, said: “The second nine will bring additional harmony and balance to the routing and golfer experience, and we are excited to team with Nicklaus Design to complete this world-class course.”

The completion of the course will see a slight re-routing, with arguably the course’s signature hole, number 2, becoming the course’s new number 18, in a bid to provide golfers with a spectacular finish.

The course is also a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, ensuring fully restored streams and native shrubs and grasses adorn the course.
