Mackenzie & Ebert designs new course for Puerto Rico resort
Shaping is in progress on a new Mackenzie & Ebert golf course at Moncayo, a 1,100-acre luxury development along Puerto Rico’s eastern coast that will include a hotel, nature reserve, organic farm and private village.
The 18-hole course will be the firm’s first design in the Caribbean, and will feature views of the El Yunque Mountains, the island’s beaches and the Caribbean Sea.
“Designing our first course in the Caribbean has been an exciting challenge, one that allows us to blend renowned design with the natural beauty of Puerto Rico and the wonderful land at Moncayo as we grow our international footprint,” said Martin Ebert. “Our design seeks to respect and enhance the island’s natural landscape with a layout that challenges golfers while offering truly breathtaking 360-degree views of the ocean and mountains for a unique sense of its location.
“The test with golf is always whether people will remember each individual hole at the end of the round, and I think there will be no problem at all at Moncayo. Every hole will be very memorable.”

The 7,200-yard course will be reserved exclusively for resident members and their guests, and will include six sets of tees. In addition to the 18-hole layout, there will be a nine-hole reversible short course, a one-acre putting course and a practice facility.
The project team also includes Heritage Links, CMF Global, Inc. and Prinsco, Inc. Grassing will begin soon and include Platinum TE paspalum supplied by Atlas Turf International.
The practice facility will include a golf performance centre, with golf operations and instruction to be led by Manuel Relancio, who has spent the last 10 years overseeing teams at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic.
