McNeil plans to recapture Ross bunker style at Burlington CC

Robert McNeil of Northeast Golf Company is under way with a project to recapture the Donald Ross bunker style at Burlington Country Club in Vermont.

The course, designed by Ross in 1924, is close to Lake Champlain and the University of Vermont and has views of the Green Mountains and Vermont’s highest peak, Mount Mansfield. It was previously renovated in the 1990s, but the routing remains the same as Ross’s original 1924 layout.

“The work includes the careful recapturing of the classic bunker styling that defined Ross’s work during this time,” said McNeil. “Working with old pictures of the property and some original Ross designs, all the bunkering will be rebuilt to reflect the era.

“The project also includes extensive subsurface drainage to improve playability on historically wet holes seven, eight, nine and eighteen, a new main sewer line routed through four holes and forward tee expansions.”

Construction began in September 2019 and is being managed by the club’s general manager Jason Shattie, alongside contractors Don Weston and White Golf Construction.
