Moroder's Italian intentions

Italian architect Wilfried Moroder has secured a contract to design and construct a 36-hole golf resort in the country's Piedmont region.

The La Pironda Country Golf Resort & Spa site will cover 220ha, sits 250m above sea level in the province of Asti and is around 50km from Turin. The parkland plot is situated in a wine and truffle growing region and in addition to the golf course will feature a clubhouse, a golf academy, a hotel and spa, an apartment-hotel and real estate for approximately 1,100 beds, as well as various other sporting facilities. The project masterplan has been approved by the Piedmont authorities with construction planned to start in 2009. The course, together with all the buildings and infrastructures, will be designed by Moroder's company. Plans include the recovery and restyling of an old factory to form the clubhouse and proshop.

Two courses are planned for the site.

The Lake Course is the shorter of the two, at 6,200m, par 72. The two ninehole loops will circle the lakes and give views of the nearby village, Montiglio, as well as the castle that sits on top of the hill to the south. The course features a long par five with water all down the left, which eventually crosses the lake itself. Another par five plays alongside a protected truffle area.

The second course will be par 73, measuring 6,700m. The Mountain Course will reach the top of the site's northern hill and turn down into a valley with the 650m par five ninth hole. The course will then cross the river and go on until it reaches the riding track, before turning around another hill and coming back up to the clubhouse.
