New nine-hole South Shore course opens in Rhode Island
A new nine-hole golf course at the South Shore Village over-55s community in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, has opened for resident play.
The South Shore GC layout, routed by golf course architect Ron Cutlip and built by Talent Golf Inc and managed by Doug Long of Momentum Golf, is Rhode Island’s first newbuild in over a decade. The routing takes players through woodland, with wide hole corridors to provide separation between golf and home sites.
“Standout holes include the double dogleg par-five sixth, the drop shot par-three third, the par-four first which is driveable for the longest of hitters, and the par-four seventh, with its massive quirky, two-tiered putting surface,” said golf writer Anthony Pioppi, author of two books on nine-hole golf courses and who is a consultant for the project. “The South Shore greens are chock full of movement and have an abundance of hole locations.
South Shore is a par 35 that can be played from four sets of tees ranging from 2,058 to 3,054 yards. Each hole also has a par-three tee to allow the course to be played as a par 27 of 1,400 yards.
The club’s practice facility includes a driving range with a 30,000-square-foot grass teeing area as well as a chipping green, practice bunker and a putting green. The community’s property also has various nature trails, a large community centre with fitness equipment, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
South Shore will open the course to guests in spring 2024, around the same time that the final phase of the residential development begins. Home prices range from around $750,000 to $1.2 million.
