New Pete Dye golf course taking shape at Maryland resort

A total rebuild of a golf course at the Inn at Perry Cabin resort in St Michaels, Maryland, is on schedule for opening in Spring 2018.

The project is a collaboration between Pete and Alice Dye and their son P.B. Dye. They describe it as a “family mulligan,” because Pete worked on the same site (formerly the nearby Harbourtowne Resort’s golf course) in the 1960s with his late brother Roy Andy Dye, before the developer went bankrupt.

“Several holes have a links-style feeling with continuous movement and some mounding that almost looks like natural sand dunes,” explained P.B. “The seventh has the same philosophy as the ninth hole at Yale, a famous ‘Biarritz’ hole with a big saddle in the middle of the green. It’s definitely not a hole that you see on the Eastern Shore, so it’s going to stand out.”

P.B. continued: “At the turn, you enter into an almost parkland-type course, holes ten to fifteen are in the woods with majestic old trees. You feel as if the course has been there for years. Then the last three holes — what we call the ‘Good Night Kiss’ — golfers are going to remember, with a short par four, a replica of the island green from TPC Sawgrass, and the eighteenth will be one of the most majestic finishing holes in golf.”

“This golf course is exciting because it incorporates all of the Pete Dye mysterious things that he does,” said Alice Dye, Pete’s wife and long-time design collaborator. “As you go along, it builds up and you see a little Pete Dye here and a few more Pete Dye elements there, and then you get to the sixteenth hole and the final three holes are so exciting.”

The golf course will only be available to club members and guests of the Inn at Perry Cabin resort.

A video that includes visualisations of numerous holes is available at www.linksatperrycabin.com.
