PGA West hires Tim Liddy to restore Stadium course’s original character

PGA West in La Quinta, California, has hired Tim Liddy to oversee a renovation of the Pete Dye-designed Stadium course.

The project, which will begin this summer, includes work on tees, bunkers and greens, as well as updates to the drainage and irrigation systems.

“Tim Liddy was our ideal choice to manage this major restoration project,” said PGA West executive director Ben Dobbs. “He boasts nearly three decades of experience working with the legendary Pete Dye, including projects at Ford Plantation, Colleton River Club, Mystic Rock, Kingsmill and many others.”

Liddy said: “The Stadium course is important in the annals of golf course architecture and restoring the original character will bring back its rich patina. The scale and severity of Dye’s bunkers is legendary, and the Stadium course is no exception.”

The 7,300-yard layout, which hosts The American Express tournament on the PGA Tour, is famous for its island green seventeenth hole, known as Alcatraz (pictured).

“The Stadium course can’t be improved upon so what we’ve proposed is a refinement, not a redesign,” Liddy said. “I’m excited to work with PGA West and look forward to continuing Pete Dye’s legacy on this truly iconic golf course.”

Work is expected to be completed by autumn 2023.
