Ponte Vedra reopens Ocean course following Weed renovation

The Ocean course has reopened at Ponte Vedra Inn & Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, following a renovation by Bobby Weed Golf Design.

Land at the north end of the property was identified for the project, allowing for routing adjustments and practice facility renovations.

Other renovation work has included rebuilding 20 greens; restoring bridges, bulkheads, and irrigation systems; and introducing 14 acres of coquina-like screenings areas to replace rough grasses, decrease water usage and strengthen the course’s seaside character.

The first tee has been transformed into a multi-use space with 20,000 square feet of bermuda grass now serving as both a teeing ground and outdoor event venue. The ninth hole’s island green (pictured) has also been lowered so guests can see it from the clubhouse.

A revamped practice facility has been created, tripling teeing grounds and adding double-sided practice targets. The range is joined on the north end by a new short game area.

Due to the expansion of the practice facility, the former par-four tenth hole was eliminated. The identified land parcel is now home to the new par-three thirteenth, which has been inspired by the Dell, with palm trees framing the low-profile green design.

“I’d like to thank Herbert Peyton, chairman of Gate Petroleum, for entrusting our team to update this beloved layout,” said Weed. “As a long-time area resident, I receive great gratification in equipping the Ocean course with a strong foundation for the next generation of members and resort guests.”

“We are delighted that Bobby Weed Golf Design has upgraded our club for a bright future,” said Dale Haney, president of Gate Hospitality Group. “Bobby’s innovative thinking around maintainability, environmental practices and strategic shot values will endow the Ocean course with exciting attributes for years to come.”
