Spring 2025 issue of ASGCA’s By Design magazine is out now

The Spring 2025 issue of By Design magazine from the American Society of Golf Course Architects is now available in digital format.

The lead story of this new issue explores whether public facilities are investing in their courses in response to the boom in golf participation. Architects Todd Schoeder, Mark Mungeam and Todd Quitno share their experiences on recent municipal projects.

“Most of my municipal work started with the need to address deferred maintenance, with a lot of these places having been run on a shoestring budget,” says Quitno.

“Speed of play, shortening the separation between tee times and efficient maintenance are of interest to my clients,” says Mungeam.

By Design also considers the design work for TGL, golf’s hi-tech simulator league. Chad Goetz of Nicklaus Design and Agustin Pizá discuss the design decisions behind their TGL holes, and provide interesting insight into the parameters they were working within. “If you’re looking at a five-storey screen and you have a shot that is more than six to 10 per cent uphill, you can’t see the horizon,” says Pizá.

The issue also includes a photo gallery from the 2025 GCSAA Conference & Trade Show in San Diego, California, and news from several ASGCA member projects, including Dye Designs’ greens work at Woo Jeong Hills and Curley-Wagner’s new course in the Philippines; plus an interview with Alex Hay of Lobb + Partners, and much more.
