Stephen Kay completes renovation work at the East Orange Golf Club

Golf course architect Stephen Kay has completed an extensive project at the East Orange Golf Club in New Jersey, US.

Work started in 2014 and saw the 18-hole course closed for a year, before a partial reopening took place in 2015 while much of the course was still undergoing renovations.

East Orange Golf Course was originally designed by Tom Bendelow in 1926, and joins the long list of courses Stephen Kay has worked on in New Jersey, which includes those at Blue Heron Pines GC in Egg Harbor City, Scotland Run GC in Williamsburg, and The Architect’s Club in Phillipsburg.

“The goal of the renovation was to restore the old-fashioned charm of the golf course and make it appealing to players of all abilities,” said Kay. “We have re-created a player-friendly and aesthetically appealing golf course that is affordable and allows for a relatively brisk pace of play.”

The recent project included the construction of two new golf holes, as well as a new practice area, driving range, and new putting green at the club, which lies near the town of Short Hills some 20 miles from central New York City.

Other elements of the project included the returfing of all greens with a new variety of bentgrass. All tee boxes have been rebuilt, and the bunkering throughout the course has been redesigned and rebuilt.

Work on a new clubhouse at the club will also be completed later this year.

Kay worked closely with golf course superintendent Juan Casiano throughout the project, as well as contractors Turco Golf Construction, Maser Engineering and Marziani & Associates Architects.
