Texas A&M set for October opening

The opening of the redesigned golf course on the campus of Texas A&M University is nearing ever closer, with the course set to open in late October.

Many of the holes have already grassed in, particularly around the 158 bunkers on the course, designed by architect Jeff Blume and overseen by both the university and Sterling Golf.

A Texas A&M graduate, Blume has designed a par-71 course that will play just over 7,000 yards from the back tees. The new course is a complete redesign of the original, which opened in 1950. Blume has previously stated his desire to hark back to the designs of Seth Raynor, CB Macdonald and AW Tillinghast.

Work began in October 2012, with Landscaped Unlimited carrying out the construction work. GCA reported in March on some of the features of interest, including the addition of sand soil base to the fairways, elevated greens, and a brand new irrigation system. Sterling Golf will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of the Texas A&M course.
