Wild Dunes reopens following renovation led by Fazio firm

The Wild Dunes resort in South Carolina has reopened its Links course after a six month renovation project led by architect Bryan Bowers of Tom Fazio’s design practice.

Wild Dunes was Fazio’s first solo design, and is also notable as the late architect Mike Strantz was a key part of the Fazio team on the job. The redesign work on the course includes a 180 degree view of the Atlantic Ocean on the seventeenth and eighteenth holes. The course also got a new irrigation system, Champion bermuda greens, new cart paths, a renovated halfway house and a new practice facility.

“It’s pretty unique,” director of golf Jeff Minton, told the local newspaper. “Every day, there’s different wind, different conditions. It’s similar to the original hole in that it’s a dogleg to the right and someone who’s played it before will recognise the shape, but all the club members who’ve had a chance to play through agree that it’s even better than before.” The sand dunes between the course and the ocean have been built up to try and relieve the problems of beach erosion that the course has faced over several years.
