Golf Course Architecture - Issue 65, July 2021

39 “The developer is an avid golfer and recognises the importance of getting the balance correct between the housing and golf aspects of the development, therefore, myself and the building architect were involved from the very start,” he said. “The third, fourth and eleventh holes will be quite spectacular as they are very much risk and reward holes along the edge of the lake. The fifth will be a very memorable standout: a driveable par four with cross bunkers that will catch all balls short of the target.” Howes expects to have 12 holes and the practice area seeded this year with the remaining holes seeded in spring 2022. Nine holes should be ready for play by May 2022 with the full 18 by September 2022. Torekovs Golfklubb, located on Sweden’s west coast, has appointed Caspar Grauballe to develop a master plan of golf course renovations. The club, founded in the 1920s, is one of the oldest in the country. It moved to its present location in 1939 and has been renovated several times over the years. “Torekovs is a seaside course with lots of links and heathland elements,” said Grauballe. “This has spawned the club’s wish for the creation of a development plan that can create a ‘red thread’ through the course and ensure that all changes going forward build towards creating the best possible golfing experience for the members and guests.” In his plan, Grauballe will look at updating the playing strategy of holes to give players more options. “The vision is to create a course that seamlessly blends into the surroundings and can take full advantage of the close proximity to the sea,” he said. The architect will also consider the increased levels of play the course has experienced over the last few years, which has caused some wear and tear, and what can be done to address the areas affected. “I’m very honoured to be working with Torekovs as it holds a special place in Swedish golf,” said Grauballe. “The course has a unique setting right along the sea and a nature reserve. It will be an exciting challenge to retain the special atmosphere and charm of the course and at the same time make it an even better golf experience. I’m really looking forward to this cooperation, which I am sure will draw upon my experience working with classic links courses.” Torekovs GK selects Caspar Grauballe for renovation There are three par threes on the six-hole stretch from twelve to seventeen Photo: Caspar Grauballe
