Golf Course Architecture - Issue 72, April 2023

Jansen Golf Design and its artificial turf division, Pelz Player Greens, are working on three new eighteen-hole putting courses in the USA, Canada and Australia. In Wisconsin, St. Croix National Golf and Events Center hopes its putting course, which will open this summer, will attract new members and public play. The design is inspired by the best of Wisconsin golf, with holes around a central pond reflecting those along the shores of Lake Michigan at Whistling Straits; contouring and ground features inspired by Lawsonia Links; and the bunkers and fescue-laden surrounds of Erin Hills. In St. Thomas, Ontario, a new putting course located next to Pinafore Park is due to open in late spring. “With elevation change of up to three metres, players will be taken on an adventure as holes weave through a myriad of different environments including pond and stream systems, rock features and grassland,” said architect Paul Jansen. In Sydney, Australia, a new putting course will form part of a Swing City Golf entertainment complex. The layout will include revetted bunkers, contouring to create visual and strategic interest, and has a flexible routing. The complex is due to open soon and will also include a driving range designed so that no ball collection and maintenance is required. “It’s exciting for our brands to be so active in the golf entertainment space across continents. We recently opened new offices in Asia and Africa to help service some of our upcoming projects as we see a growing demand for our products,” said Jansen. SYNLawn synthetic turf, developed in partnership with Dave Pelz and Pelz Player Greens, has been chosen for these projects. The artificial turf provides true-to-grass playability and is a low maintenance option. 44 Jansen at work on three new putting courses TEE BOX Images: Jansen Golf Design The putting course at St. Croix National will have holes inspired by Whistling Straits, Lawsonia Links and Erin Hills The St. Thomas putting course which will play among rocks and streams
