Golf Course Architecture - Issue 72, April 2023

49 The Dunas course at Terras da Comporta in Portugal is on track to open this summer. The layout is David McLay-Kidd’s first in mainland Europe. The links-style course is an hour’s drive south of Lisbon and has been built over 84 hectares of natural, sandy terrain. “It’s pretty challenging but is forgiving if you get into trouble,” said Kidd. “You’ve got a chance to get back into the game, and how could you ever complain about the amazing weather in Portugal together with the beaches, cafes, food and people. It’s all beautiful and I would encourage anyone to come and visit.” Terras da Comporta to open Dunas course this summer Craig Haltom has completed another phase of a project on the Lawsonia Links course in Green Lake, Wisconsin. The architect is restoring bunkers on the William Langford and Theodore Moreau layout to their original 1930 design, with help from golf historian and researcher Dan Moore. “Ron Forse got Lawsonia back on track with a tree removal and green expansion plan in 1998,” said Haltom. “We are improving drainage and adding sand to the bunkers, but in reality there is very little work to do. An equally exciting part of the project is restoring the original width and mowing lines. Dan Moore has helped us tremendously in getting this right, and golfers are going to love it. The closer the course gets to the original 1930 design, the better it gets every year.” Jeff Lynch of design firm (re)GOLF is under way with a renovation of the golf course at Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links near Dublin, Ireland. The project involves rerouting holes eight, nine, twelve, fourteen, fifteen and seventeen. DAR Golf Construction will build six new greens and three new tees. “A nature concept was the main driver for the redesign,” said Lynch. “We are trying to engage the members and guests with a more coastal experience both visually and acoustically.” Jeff Lynch continues with Portmarnock Links redesign Craig Haltom restores bunkers at Lawsonia Links Photo: Dan Moore Photo: James Hogg Image: Golfgraffix
