Golf Course Architecture - Green Pages 2022

10 Raymond Hearn is overseeing a renovation of the golf course at Midlothian Country Club near Chicago, Illinois. Construction work began in autumn 2021 and is expected to be completed in spring 2022. “We have had the privilege of working with three pre-1900 courses to date,” says Hearn. “We started consulting for the Midlothian Country Club in 2014 and developed a long-range master plan, which was carefully studied and improved over the next few years. In 2021 we presented a restoration/renovation plan that was overwhelmingly approved and supported by the great membership at this historic club.” Midlothian Country Club was founded in 1898 with a design by Herbert Tweedie. “The club has stood the test of time and has provided great thrill and enjoyment for many members and their guests over the century,” says Hearn. “The club also has a rich tournament history, most notably the 1914 US Open won by the legendary Walter Hagen. The golf course is truly a hallowed ground where Hagen, Charles ‘Chick’ Evans, Francis Ouimet, Bobby Jones, Bryon Nelson, Gene Sarazen and many more of the game’s greatest players competed. Needless to say, this has been a great honour and privilege for me.” Hearn says Midlothian’s president Matt Barry, past president Mark Wheeler and board members have provided great support for the project. “As one of the original clubs in the Chicagoland area, and a former US Open course, we have an incredible history, so when we looked for an architect, we wanted someone who would build on that history without changing what our members love about Midlothian,” says Barry. “From our first meeting, Ray respected our great history and carefully listened to our members to understand our goals and objectives. Ray was able to provide a full restoration and renovation of our bunkers with an innovative yet traditional look and feel. He also provided new strategy and shot value throughout the course. The improvements Ray recommended, combined with never losing sight of the course’s playability for players of all ability, has resulted in a fantastic improvement to our club. We could not be happier.” Midlothian Country Club has turned to Raymond Hearn to overhaul its historic 1898 Tweedie course A respectful renovation RAYMOND HEARN GOL F COURSE DES IGNS New bunkering benefits from modern technology while retaining a traditional aesthetic
