WELCOME Project boom We all wondered whether the boom in golf participation that arose from the pandemic would translate to new investment in golf courses and, if so, when. If reports from golf course suppliers are anything to go by, it is well and truly happening now. As a result, one of the main issues architects and contractors are grappling with is how to manage clubs’ expectations of when resource will be available for work on their courses. The quality of partnerships between clubs and their suppliers has never been more important. We hope that the golf businesses listed in this 2022 edition of GCA Green Pages, our annual supplier directory, can help you make the most of investments in your own course, and capitalise on golf’s surge in popularity. This issue includes reports on several projects that have been undertaken during 2021, from the perspective of some of the suppliers involved. We hear more about the projects at The Addington in England, Vidauban in France, LaFincaGolf Los Lagos in Spain and Raleigh CC, Midlothian CC and Tower Tee in the United States. Our supplier directory section lists businesses that are specialists in golf course design, development, maintenance and related disciplines, and can support your plans. 8 RA IN B I RD The restoration of The Addington Golf Club, just nine miles from central London, is continuing apace. The course was built in 1913, however the opening was postponed until 1919 due to the First World War, with the bunkering and clubhouse finished in the 1920s. A long-term plan to bring this John Abercromby-Harry Colt course back to its former glory was developed by golf design firm Clayton, DeVries & Pont after extensive research into the course’s architectural history. Analysis in 2019 revealed that much of the original course layout and bunker placement remained intact, hidden beneath an overgrown and neglected landscape. The resulting blueprint was the framework for future renovation work that would enhance the playing experience yet respect the architectural mastery of the original design. The aim was to highlight and reinstate elements that had been lost over the past seventy years. A renovation programme began in 2020 and will continue through to 2025. Work completed has included upgrading the existing Rain Bird irrigation system within a comprehensive and sustainabilityfocused site strategy for irrigation, drainage, water reclamation, woodland management, as well as course Restoring an Abercromby-Colt course to its former glory The Addington has installed a Rain Bird IC System as part of a major renovation that began in 2020 The striking impact of tree removal at The Addington, as seen here on the famous par-three thirteenth Photos: The Addington

and boundary maintenance. In consultation with the club’s woodland management advisor and agronomist, a tree removal programme has cleared sightlines and revealed more of the course’s dramatic topography. MJ Abbott first installed the Rain Bird system 20 years ago on tees, greens and approaches and had continued to maintain it until commissioned, initially, to add fairway irrigation to accommodate much wider fairways planned by the architects. The intention had been to expand the system at a later date to enlarge greens, taking them back to their original shapes and sizes and to add coverage to surrounds and tees. However, there were major cost savings to be made by upgrading greens and surrounds at the same time as fairways, and doing so would also avoid the disruption of a second installation in a few years’ time. So the decision was made to go ahead, broadening the project scope significantly to encompass the wider remit of the architects’ plan; notably to enable the course to complete irrigation overnight across the whole site within an eight-hour window. In a period reduced from 11 to eight hours, watering would take place between 10pm and 6am, primarily so golfers could play on into the evenings during summer months. A new pump station, a 500-cubic-metre Permastore tank, a borehole pump and increased mains water feed were installed, and the existing control system upgraded to Rain Bird IC System with Cirrus Central Control, Rain Bird’s most advanced irrigation solution, combining computer-aided design with GPS geo-referenced images and stateof-the-art ET-based scheduling. Valve boxes on tees were also replaced in readiness for improvement work to bunkers and tees scheduled to take place over the next three to four years. By adding three and five-row irrigation on fairways where none existed previously, upgrading and adding new Rain Bird 752 Series rotors on reinstated larger greens and back-toback rotors on surrounds, irrigation is precise, more focused and deliberately limits coverage to rough and restored heather. Jim Price, operations director at MJ Abbott, says: “We’ve been involved with The Addington for many years now, and in the first phase from October 2020 to March 2021 we worked with the client, liaising closely with golf architects Mike Clayton, Mike DeVries and Frank Pont to turn what’s a large scale, very forward-thinking approach into reality, on site and in the ground. It’s been very exciting and refreshing to see investment on this scale and the approach doesn’t cut any corners. The irrigation system is ultra-future-proof and uses the very latest technology including 65-inch screens for mapping course irrigation.” Ryan Noades, the club’s managing director, says: “The new Rain Bird system limits the amount of water we’re applying, putting us in line with the best systems being installed today. Designing the whole system together significantly improved efficiency of water use. Reducing overwatering gives us the firmer playing surfaces we want and what this course was designed to offer golfers. We’ve massively extended our irrigation coverage yet we’re using 30 to 40 per cent less water even with larger playing surfaces, which is far better for the environment and the course, and saves us money. Rain Bird’s commitment to products being backwards compatible also means we can easily extend and upgrade our irrigation system in future years. As custodians of The Addington, we’ve two very clear aims – sustainability and playability. Our ambition is for the course to be as interesting and fun as it was in the 1920s and to restore its recognition as one of the best golf courses in the world.” For more on Rain Bird, turn to page 46 or visit www.rainbird.com/golf

Raymond Hearn is overseeing a renovation of the golf course at Midlothian Country Club near Chicago, Illinois. Construction work began in autumn 2021 and is expected to be completed in spring 2022. “We have had the privilege of working with three pre-1900 courses to date,” says Hearn. “We started consulting for the Midlothian Country Club in 2014 and developed a long-range master plan, which was carefully studied and improved over the next few years. In 2021 we presented a restoration/renovation plan that was overwhelmingly approved and supported by the great membership at this historic club.” Midlothian Country Club was founded in 1898 with a design by Herbert Tweedie. “The club has stood the test of time and has provided great thrill and enjoyment for many members and their guests over the century,” says Hearn. “The club also has a rich tournament history, most notably the 1914 US Open won by the legendary Walter Hagen. The golf course is truly a hallowed ground where Hagen, Charles ‘Chick’ Evans, Francis Ouimet, Bobby Jones, Bryon Nelson, Gene Sarazen and many more of the game’s greatest players competed. Needless to say, this has been a great honour and privilege for me.” Hearn says Midlothian’s president Matt Barry, past president Mark Wheeler and board members have provided great support for the project. “As one of the original clubs in the Chicagoland area, and a former US Open course, we have an incredible history, so when we looked for an architect, we wanted someone who would build on that history without changing what our members love about Midlothian,” says Barry. “From our first meeting, Ray respected our great history and carefully listened to our members to understand our goals and objectives. Ray was able to provide a full restoration and renovation of our bunkers with an innovative yet traditional look and feel. He also provided new strategy and shot value throughout the course. The improvements Ray recommended, combined with never losing sight of the course’s playability for players of all ability, has resulted in a fantastic improvement to our club. We could not be happier.” Midlothian Country Club has turned to Raymond Hearn to overhaul its historic 1898 Tweedie course A respectful renovation RAYMOND HEARN GOL F COURSE DES IGNS New bunkering benefits from modern technology while retaining a traditional aesthetic

Image: Midlothian Country Club Hearn’s work at Midlothian has included tree removal, restoring green corners that had been lost over time, bunker restoration and renovation, adding new bunker drainage and Pro Angle sand, fairway contouring, new green runoff areas, new forward and back tees, and new drainage. “My goal was to preserve Herbert Tweedie’s incredible original routing that has endured the test of time along with his incredible green complexes,” says Hearn. “I also wanted to make the course more fun and strategic for all skill levels that enjoy the course now and for years to come. My primary focus was to increase the strategy, shot value, playability and aesthetics throughout the course while giving it a classic look and feel.” Hearn has worked alongside golf course contractor Leibold Golf Construction, the club’s general manager Tom Ahern, and golf course superintendent Cory Von Tungein and his crew. “They have all done an outstanding job,” he says. “It has been exciting to work with them on such a wonderful and historic golf course. I can’t wait for the members to enjoy the completed project. I think they will be very pleased with the course’s classic look and feel.” The club is set to host the 2023 Western Junior amateur tournament, and Hearn thinks the competitive players will be impressed by the course’s enhanced strategy, shot value and beauty. “The work I have done brings the strategies and angles from the original design back into play and enhances the options, risks and rewards for all players especially around the outside edges of the holes that have been lost over time,” says Hearn. “Overall, I respected the club’s great history and helped restore and renovate important golf course features. We look forward to showing it off in 2022.” For more on Raymond Hearn Golf Course Designs, turn to page 46 or visit https://rhgd.com A 1925 plan helped Hearn ensure his work is respectful of the original Herbert Tweedie design Photo: Ray Hearn

Photo: MJ Abbott Bunkers at Vidauban now have a more naturalised appearance, and the overall sand area has been reduced by 30 per cent While in Harrogate, England, for the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition in January 2020, MJ Abbott agreed a contract to carry out a bunker reconstruction project at Vidauban Golf Club in southern France. At the same time, the world was just becoming aware of SARS-CoV-2, which would become more commonly known as Covid-19. The project was due to start in autumn 2020, with MJ Abbott working through the winter, but with a global pandemic in full flow, it seemed like it might falter. However, at the beginning of October 2020, vaccine jabs administered, PCR tests completed and travel plans made, a team of 20 with seven lorries of equipment set off for southern France expecting to return for a Christmas break 12 weeks later. The project manager was John Clarkin, managing director of Turfgrass Consultancy, and the design was completed by Mike Gorman, senior project architect at Robert Trent Jones II, who followed and respected the original routing that Robert Trent Jones Sr and Jr created in the early 1990s. Steve Briggs of MJ Abbott reflects on the bunker renovation project at Vidauban in France Getting it done in lockdown MJ ABBOTT

Although Turfgrass are based in the Republic of Ireland, Clarkin resides in southern France about an hour from the project. Gorman on the other hand hails from San Francisco, some 6,000 miles away. As he needed to be part of the on-site team at Vidauban, he would move to the south of France for the duration of the renovation. The renovation project saw a 30 per cent reduction in total sand area. However, we were able to create some incredible bunker visuals and a significant impact on sand throughout the entire golf course. The bunker shaping at Vidauban is severe, with face slopes in excess of 50 degrees in places. Due to the original sand no longer being available, we retained the existing sand, and then screened and bulked it up, by about 20 per cent, with local bunker sand. The high summer temperatures and drying winds make for extreme conditions for retaining turf cover, so drip line irrigation and overhead irrigation covers the perimeter of each bunker. Drained bunker bases and a 40-millimetre layer of asphalt line each bunker up to the perimeter edge. The MJ Abbott team did manage to get home for a Christmas break but had to move quickly in order to travel back to the south of France on 31 December 2020, ahead of the introduction of new travel restrictions that would have impacted the project. The team completed the works 12 weeks later and all returned to the UK in late March 2021. For more on MJ Abbott, turn to page 43 or visit www.mjabbott.co.uk Photo: Robert Trent Jones II

AGROST I S Multi-spectral mapping of golf courses Agrostis is pioneering the use of drone-based technology for golf courses, to map grass health and condition, and combining this with over 30 years’ experience in agronomic science. Our approach involves the collection and interpretation of ground cover and soil condition data over large areas and identifying the most appropriate and precisely targeted management practices. This delivers significant economic and environmental benefits through, for example, the more efficient use of precious and costly resources such as fertiliser and water. By using a sophisticated, drone-mounted camera, a par four, for example, may be photographed at regular, pre-determined, intervals, perhaps 200 or 300 times. The images are then combined to produce one picture of the entire hole. Taken from about 30 metres, that picture, as a conventional RGB (red-green-blue) image and at very high resolution, is of interest for yardage determination or bunker evaluation. But, after some years of using a drone-mounted optical camera, we have introduced a rather special instrument which captures light from outside of the visible spectrum and that cannot be seen with the human eye. This multi-spectral imagery provides information on a range of features related to the health of the grass and the general condition of the ground cover. Those features include the grass chlorophyll content, its water status, species composition and shoot density, all key components of the playing quality and aesthetics of sports turf surfaces. This very clever stuff is only of value if it can be interpreted in terms related to the actual quality of the surface from a golfing point of view and in ways that can be appreciated and acted upon by the greenkeeper. So, accompanying the multi-spectral mapping capability, Agrostis provides a hands-on assessment of the key areas flagged up by the mapping exercise. That assessment, based on actual observation and the sampling of soil and surface features on the ground, incorporates our long experience in golf research and agronomy and integrates this with the extraordinary capabilities of drone technology. The upshot is a comprehensive assessment of the agronomic needs of the course, providing environmental and economic benefits, notably in reduced fertiliser, water inputs as well as enhancements in biodiversity and habitat quality. 15 PURE SEED Pure Eclipse provides the finishing touch for Raleigh CC Raleigh Country Club in North Carolina reopened for member play in November 2020 following a renovation by Kyle Franz. The project included work on greens, bunkers and the irrigation system, as well as tree removal and new tees to add length to the course. Billy Cole, RCC’s superintendent for the past 18 years, needed to choose a grass for the new greens. He decided that they should remain bentgrass, even though most of the clubs in the region have converted to bermuda, as he felt it would prove to be a better surface for RCC’s members. He was then faced with the choice of which bentgrass variety to choose. Cole made several visits to Dr Melodee Fraser at the Pure-Seed Testing (PST) East facility in Rolesville, North Carolina, to study bentgrass variety trials. He needed a bentgrass that would stand up to the heat and disease pressure of a North Carolina summer. After much research, Cole chose Pure Eclipse. “We chose it largely because I knew it was developed in the region where I would be growing it,” he says. Cole’s project would be the first golf course to plant Pure Eclipse. Cole says “we wanted to be trendsetters”. Pure Eclipse creeping bentgrass is available exclusively from Pure Seed, powered by Tee-2-Green, and was developed by PST in Canby, Oregon, from plants obtained from Penn State University. The parents of Pure Eclipse were selected for their heat tolerance and disease resistance. Cole continues to reply to other golf course superintendents who want to learn more about Pure Eclipse and how he’s managing it. “The new greens at RCC were seeded beginning in late spring 2020, through late July,” says Cole. “The grow-in went well and the first year has been very successful.” Cole says the membership likes the firm, consistent surface of Pure Eclipse and he’s able to mow it low. “Management wise, I can only build on the foundation of the great genetics of this bentgrass,” he says. “I look forward to seeing how it performs as it matures in years to come.” For more on Pure Seed, turn to page 45 or visit www.pureseed.com New bentgrass from Pure Seed is the final piece of the jigsaw for North Carolina layout Photo: Pure Seed

SEMI L LAS F I TO The first nine holes have been seeded at LaFincaGolf Los Lagos, a new 18-hole golf course designed by Stirling &Martin in Madrid, Spain. LaFincaGolf will be a top-quality urban golf course and centrepiece of a high-end real estate residential area on the outskirts of the capital. The 550-hectare LaFincaGolf development includes luxury houses, a three-storey apartment building and a commercial centre. The golf course is being built by GTM Golf and is expected to finish in 2022. Semillas Fito is the seed supplier of the turfgrass varieties and blends for this harsh climate, which endures cold winters and very hot summers. The use of creeping bentgrass on tees, fairways and greens has been very challenging in terms of achieving sustainability and playability. For the rough, a mixture of festuca arundinacea with some poa pratensis has been chosen in order to make a very different leaf texture surface with very limited maintenance needs. The varieties selected have been rated highly by the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) in the USA and Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) in the UK. Moreover, the varieties have already been used at other golf courses, showcasing the adaptability of the product as it can perform well in climates with extreme hot summers and chilly winters. For greens, we have selected Agrostis stolonífera Tour Pro, our latest release that has come through the Rutgers University programme. This variety performed well in the latest NTEP tests, showing unbeatable disease tolerance, especially to dollar spots and brown patches. Moreover, it has less maintenance needs than other elite creeping bentgrass varieties, which is why Tour Pro has been chosen for many projects around the world. The results at LaFincaGolf so far have been awesome. For more on Semillas Fito, turn to page 49 or visit www.semillasfito.com Josep Cirera, turfgrass director at Semillas Fito, explains the seed supplier’s role in the LaFincaGolf Los Lagos project in Madrid Ensuring high performance Photo: Semillas Fito

ART SCHAUPETER Tower Tee will reopen this spring with a new range of golfing options Tower Tee in St Louis, Missouri, was a public 18-hole par-three course that closed in 2018 to make way for a planned housing development. But in 2019, the property was taken on by two new owners, Steve Walkenbach and Mike Shamia, who wanted to bring back public golf to the facility. Arthur Schaupeter was appointed as the golf architect to lead the redesign, replacing the existing layout with a nine-hole par-three course, short game area and practice range. Construction was completed in late 2021. “The anchor for the facility had been the practice range, always busy due to its location within the city and being the only nearby public golf option for a good portion of St Louis,” says Schaupeter. “The new version of the Tower Tee practice range converted what had been just an open field with yardage posts into a reshaped target-rich landing area. Multiple greens give players, at any location on the tee line, targets to play to at a variety of distances from 30 to 230 yards. The natural slope of the property was also utilised at the tee, where a two-level tee structure was built to accommodate more golfers.” The new nine-hole par-three design includes holes inspired by some of golf’s famous par threes. “This gives public golfers in St Louis a taste of world-class golf challenges at modified hole lengths,” said Schaupeter. “The nine holes play from 55 yards to 155 and sit on a beautiful, rolling 10 acres of ground. Some of the famous holes that we’ve included versions of at Tower Tee include the Redan, Biarritz, Postage Stamp and Golden Bell.” The architect also created a new 15,000-square-foot practice green, a short-game area that allows players to practice a variety of shots around two chipping greens, and a 75-yard-long pitching and chipping range. Another feature of the new practice facilities is a putting course made entirely out of artificial turf. It has nine ‘holes’ measuring 15 to 50 feet long, with each having two cup locations so players can create an eighteen-hole round. “There is a lot of golf to be accessed at this 25-acre facility right in the heart of the city,” says Schaupeter. 27 Bergin Golf Designs 100 Huntcliff Point Atlanta GA 30350 USA Contact: Bill Bergin Tel: +1 770 993 6310 info@bergingolf.com www.bergingolf.com Bergin Golf Designs came into existence in 1994. Perhaps it is no coincidence that it started from the ‘ground up’ as that is essentially the essence of its design philosophy. Having played the world’s best golf courses as a touring professional and having gained an understanding of the ability of the everyday player as a teaching professional, Bill Bergin not only feels the quality of a golf course through his feet, he judges the character of his course designs by how well they play on the ground. Bergin Golf Designs’ golf courses are, without question, demanding for the best golfers, yet fun and fair for the majority of golfers who step onto the first tee. Considered a reverent restorer of classic courses, Bergin Golf Designs’ restoration portfolio includes renovations of Tillinghast, Raynor, Langford and Ross courses. While honouring the roots of his renovation projects, Bergin modernises his courses with today’s technology, environmental stewardship, and best maintenance practices. Working with US Kids Golf and the ASGCA, Bergin has contributed to the cutting edge Longleaf Tee System, implementing it on many of his current projects. His work in this area resulted in his being selected as one of Golf Inc.’s 2017 Most Innovative People in Golf. Offering design and construction supervision services for new layouts, renovations, and practice facilities, Bergin knows golf and loves golf. Better Billy Bunker PO Box 93 Hermitage TN 37076 USA Contact: Todd Jenkins Tel: +1 615 847 8877 bbb.todd@live.com www.betterbillybunker.com The Better Billy Bunker method is the best bunker construction method in the world. This method improves the original Billy Bunker specification by eliminating geotextile liners. A two-inch lay of local pea gravel is treated with our polymer designed specifically for use in bunkers. This layer of gravel provides maximum drainage and allows water to flow to the drain tile faster than any other construction method. The method drains over 1,500 inches of water per hour, greatly reduces washouts – even on steep bunker faces, eliminates silt contamination, has a 10-year guarantee, creates playable bunkers whatever the weather and is not only affordable, but contributes to huge maintenance savings. “Let us show you why hundreds of golf courses worldwide have made the switch to Better Billy Bunker,” says Todd Jenkins of Better Billy Bunker. “Whether you are preparing for a major championship, or your club championship, we are committed to providing the most playable and maintenance friendly bunkers possible! Our clients will tell you – Better Billy Bunker works.”

COMPANI ES A- Z Blinder Bunker Liner Blinder Bunker USA 1 Greenbriar Drive Mohnton PA 19540 USA Contact: Alan FitzGerald Tel: +1 610 678 0889 blinderusa@comcast.net theblinder.com Blinder Bunker Liner is the original, porous, seamless, and completely flexible bunker liner. It was developed to be the consummate solution to bunker maintenance and contamination issues. The first trial bunkers were installed in 2008, with the commercial launch in 2011. Blinder has since been installed in over 1,500 bunkers throughout the world. Blinder uses recycled rubber mixed onsite with a binding agent to create a flexible porous liner. The unique properties of Blinder are that it is resistant to club strikes along with its ability to withstand extreme changes in temperature and the associated expansion and contraction of surrounding soil due to prevailing weather conditions. It also offers all the other benefits of a porous liner such as providing a fast, free draining medium that prevents and eliminates washouts. This in turn provides a barrier to stones working up from the base, minimising contamination of the sand, all while improving the consistency and playability of bunkers.
