Fall 2023 issue of ASGCA’s By Design magazine is out now

The Fall 2023 issue of By Design magazine from the American Society of Golf Course Architects is now available in digital format.

In the cover story of the latest edition, golf course architects with experience of designing for match play explain their thought processes when trying to create a layout for this format. Gil Hanse, Andy Staples and Tom Marzolf share insights into the decision-making for their courses at Ohoopee Match Club, PGA National and Adare Manor.

This issue of By Design also includes an interview with golf operator Frank Jemsek, the recipient of the 2023 Donald Ross Award, who talks about his family’s life in the game. Jemsek’s clubs include St. Andrews Golf & Country Club in West Chicago and Cog Hill, a PGA Tour site for 20 years, hosting the Western Open and BMW Championship.

Leann Cooper, a senior manager of GCSAA’s First Green program, discusses the program’s positive impact on the golf course industry, while Stacie Zinn Roberts explains the role of Tahoma 31 grass in the design of The Battlefield, the new par-three golf course at Shangri-La Resort.

There’s much more too, including news of Todd Eckenrode’s revamp of Sharon Heights in California; recent data from the R&A showing golf participation has risen by a third since 2016; and a page from the sketchbook of Paul Albanese for his project at Amber Hills in Vietnam.

By Design is free of charge. To subscribe, visit the By Design page of the ASGCA website, where you can also review the entire back catalogue.
