Knaresborough completes first phase of remodelling plan

Knaresborough Golf Club near Harrogate, England, has completed the first phase of a five-year remodelling programme, under the direction of golf course architect David Hemstock.

Hemstock Design developed a long-term plan in 2018 to complete upgrades to the parkland course, working alongside Knaresborough’s project team of Tom Halliday, club manager Ivor Roy and club professional Andy Turner.

The current phase of work includes new bunkering, tree management, and the potential to add new golf. Eight new bunkers have been added over the winter, to improve visual interest and add decision-making challenge to tee shots, and are currently growing in.

In January 2019, Knaresborough staff completed turf stripping, path construction and tree works, as well as creating new bunkers on the sixth and seventh. In February, bunkers were added on the fourteenth and seventeenth holes, with drainage and sumps, where necessary.

“The club celebrates its centenary in 2020, with this initial work – combined with greens turf quality improvements, path, drainage and irrigation upgrades in previous years – all being part of the build-up,” said Hemstock.

The club is also opening a new grass driving range on 9 March, with more targets and improved hitting areas.
