New Stillwater golf course on track for November 2021 opening

Grassing is in progress on a new Bobby Weed golf course in northeast Florida, located between Jacksonville and St. Augustine.

The Stillwater layout will sit within a new 550-home community from developer Lennar and is the first new golf course to be built on Florida’s First Coast since 2004.

“Don’t expect a golf course from the past,” said Weed. “We’ll have things you don’t see on north Florida courses, such as sod wall bunkers, lay-down walls... they will be angled, with a much cleaner, elegant finish. As the area’s first new course in almost two decades, we are providing Lennar with something distinct and different.”

The course, which will be managed by Hampton Golf, will be a par 71 that extends to 6,800 yards. According to Weed, it will include numerous wetlands, undisturbed native areas and strategically placed bunkers, as well as having no rough. Weed’s routing can also be played as loops of three, six, nine, twelve or fifteen holes, with every third hole returning to the clubhouse.

Soil at Stillwater is relatively sandy and does not require bunkers to be lined. “We’re pretty far along and the surprise is that the soil is much better than I initially thought,” said Weed. “It will be fantastic for draining and playability.”

The course will feature revetted pot bunkers, made possible by EcoBunker’s synthetic bunker edging system. The walls sit at angles between 55 and 75 degrees. “Revetted bunkers are exceptionally rare in warm season grass environments,” said Richard Allen, inventor and CEO of EcoBunker. “The extreme nature of these climates means that bunker faces can easily be destroyed by heavy rain. Our product helps solve that problem.”

Grassing should be completed by the end of August, and the course is expected to open by Thanksgiving in November.
