Pangaea Golf Architecture, the design practice of Stuart Rennie and Jeff Danner, has been selected by South Ayrshire Council in Scotland to develop renovation plans for its Darley and Belleisle courses.

The authority looks after eight golf courses: Darley, Lochgreen and Fullarton in Troon; Bellisle and Seafield at Belleisle Park, and Dalmilling, in Ayr; and Girvan and Maybole, both close to Turnberry.

Rennie and Danner will be supported on the projects at Darley and Belleisle by former Open champion Paul Lawrie. The architects are already under way with detailed site analysis, including topographical and ecological surveys, to better understand each course’s character. The initial design concepts are expected to be unveiled this summer.

“Having grown up playing historic courses like Darley and Belleisle, this is an exciting opportunity to bring our passion and expertise in design to get it right,” said Rennie. “Our goal is to enhance the playability and natural beauty of these courses, ensuring they meet the highest standards for golfers of all levels.”

Danner said: “Working on two very different courses presents a unique dynamic to the design process. On the one hand, we are looking to leverage and elevate the firm and fast attributes of a sandy site with endless potential in the Darley. On the other hand, at Belleisle, we have an opportunity to immerse ourselves in James Braid’s legacy and figure out how to pay tribute while meeting the needs of modern golfers.”

As part of a commitment to community engagement, the initial design concepts will be shared with the public to allow golfers and community members to offer feedback and ensure that the renovation work reflects the community’s needs and desires.

Councillor Brian Connolly, South Ayrshire’s portfolio holder for sport and leisure, said: “I’m delighted that plans are moving forward at Darley and Belleisle courses with the appointment of Pangaea Golf Architecture. This project highlights our commitment to enriching our golfing legacy.”

Lawrie will provide a player’s perspective for the project to ensure that the new designs align with the needs and expectations of golfers.

“It’s also really exciting to have Paul Lawrie involved,” said Connolly. “His worldwide reputation as a Major winner and Ryder Cup player makes Mr Lawrie the ideal man to oversee this project. Add in his renowned reputation created by his Paul Lawrie Foundation and the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, and we have the ideal person to help us establish our golf development academy. We’re all looking forward to working with Paul and Pangaea.”
