Sanford Ferris to begin Cavalry Club renovation in July

Cavalry Club in Manlius, New York, has hired Sanford Ferris Golf Course Design to renovate its Dick Wilson/Joe Lee layout.

Architect David Ferris, who is leading the project, is returning to the course where he learned to play golf. Ferris’s uncle was one of the charter golf members at the club, while his father worked there as a golf professional in the 1970s.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to return home to Cavalry, a place that holds so many wonderful memories and where golf became a part of my life,” said Ferris. “When I played Cavalry as a kid, I had no idea who Dick Wilson and Joe Lee were, but I’m convinced that my fascination with golf course design and Wilson’s work is rooted in that early immersion. I’ve never been more excited about a restoration project.”

Construction is starting in July and includes rebuilding and restoring bunkers, reintroducing collection areas around greens, restoring fairway cuts in landing areas, and tree removal to bring back the feel of the original layout.

Future work at Cavalry includes rebuilding tees, additional tree clearing, adding native fescue areas, drainage, practice area renovations, and creating a short-game area.
