Spence Golf completes renovation work at the CC of North Carolina

Spence Golf has completed a major renovation of the Dogwood course at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, US.

Led by golf course architect Kris Spence, the project included the full redesign and renovation all bunkers throughout the course. A number of bunkers have been added, while others were removed or repositioned to strengthen angles of play and course strategy.

The course’s greens have been resurfaced with Champion Ultradwarf bermudagrass, while certain areas of the greens have been expanded to move closer to bunkers and fill pad edges.

Entirely new green complexes were created for holes four, ten, 15, 16 and 18, while a selected number of greens have had contour adjustments.

Zeon Zoysia has been added to the tees and fairways, which will provide contrast with the bermudagrass roughs.

The Dogwood course was originally designed by Ellis Maples in 1963.

“It was not my intention to completely redesign the Dogwood course just to put my name on it,” said Spence. “I sought to identify the weak areas of the course and strengthen them while retaining the best features of the original Maples course. I think the members will be ecstatic with the finished product. The wow factor is off the charts due to the strong visual contrast between the Zeon fairways, Bermuda roughs and new bunkers. Extensive drainage work was installed in the fairways and approaches to provide firmer and faster playing surfaces. One of our most important goals was to improve the ground game in the approach areas and around the new greens.”

A soft opening of the reworked course will take place 2 September, with a formal presentation to the club’s membership on 10 September.
